How Being Flexible Helped Nicki Give Birth Vaginally

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

When the contractions started taking my breath away and were coming every 10 minutes or so. I had a lot of Braxton Hicks so this was the real deal!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

When I could no longer breathe and get on top of the contractions. The baby's heart rate was dropping significantly so my husband and I had to make some decisions.

  • Me-B
  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Have conversations with my husband before hand. I wanted him to know what I was thinking and wanting while I was coherent and not focused on labor.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

    That I did it. Twice.

  • I had conversations with my husband before hand. I wanted him to know what I was thinking and wanting while I was coherent and not focused on labor.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Breathing. But I did have to have medical pain relief when my child was in distress. By the time delivery came around, I was feeling it all again and called all of the shots pushing.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    Semi-on my side.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Both times it was surreal. That is the only way to describe it.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Do all your research. Plan. Make sure everyone knows what you want. But then be ready to go with the flow. Rigidity is painful.
