Educating Herself About VBAC and Hiring a Team Helped Jessica During Her Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

On Saturday, December 10th contractions became regular and timable. I was sure I was in labor after 8 hours non stop, so we called the midwife.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

My labor stalled at 8cm and I transferred for evaluation for suspected acyclinic presentation. Due to my previous birth trauma my blood pressure was extremely high. Luckily, my midwife and husband were there to advocate for me and I was able to leave and go home again!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Educate myself about VBAC and hire a team who I knew would support my choices no matter what.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

Once transition kicked in I was surprised by my animalistic instinct used to cope in labor. Growling through contractions helped me cope.

  • Don't doubt yourself. Cope 1 contraction at a time and remember there will be an end!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Growling low and laboring in the shower.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Hands and knees, then flipped to deliver the body because the cord was around his neck.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Amazing! Especially after missing the first 7 hours of my older sons life.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Don't doubt yourself. Cope 1 contraction at a time and remember there will be an end!
