When did you realize you were really in labor?
My waters broke but contractions didn’t start right away. I had bouts of exhausting, intense prodromal labor for 5 weeks before the day she was born so even after a gush of amniotic fluid, I still didn’t trust my instincts and remained in denial until I was pretty heavily in active labor.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Overcoming close family’s feelings about my safety.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Midwifery care to really address all aspects of pregnancy (not just physical but emotional too)

What surprised you about your birth?
How different it was from my first two deliveries and how much I mourned the birth being over.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Sacral pressure, leaning over counters/dressers/etc, being in the tub, squeezing my husband’s hand.

On knees leaning over a peanut ball.

Absolute magic.
