Role Playing Different Scenarios That Could Happen During Labor Helped Rachel During Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I woke up to a painful contraction at 4:30am. I hadn't had much buildup to this point. So I knew something this powerful must be it.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The pain. As much as I liked the control and feeling the movement from each stage, it was hard to experience that much pain without knowing how long it would last.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I told my husband exactly what he needed to do to help me. We even role played different scenarios that could happen during labor. That was the benefit of this being my second labor. I learned from the first time things I was inclined to like or need. I wrote down specific instructions and lists of things for my husband to try as he helped me. And he was with me 100% just how I needed him.

Side note: I listened to the Mama Natural affirmations all the time during my 3rd trimester and it was the only thing I wanted to listen to during labor. I would notice it in the background and it had great advice throughout. Reminding me to relax, smile, stay on top of the wave, etc.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

My first labor was mostly clouded by pain and fear. I was surprised that I was able to take control of my mind and body this time. Even with pain I was able to relax through contractions and allow my uterus to do the work it needed to. I felt my body go through the different stages of labor. I even knew I was building up to push about 20 minutes before it happened. I felt in tune with my body and used that power to get through the pain.

  • Make sure you feel safe and confident in the space you choose. My success came when I believed in myself and was open to taking charge of my own labor by moving, trying new positions or staying where I was instead of waiting for the midwives to tell me what to do.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Relaxing through contractions, movement, and the birth tub! I also put together a birth wall with quotes. There were a few quotes I'd repeat over and over in my mind to distract me or encourage me.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Squatting with my husband helping to hold me up from behind.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

I felt a lot of relief!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Make sure you feel safe and confident in the space you choose. My success came when I believed in myself and was open to taking charge of my own labor by moving, trying new positions or staying where I was instead of waiting for the midwives to tell me what to do.
