Turning to God, Asking for Strength, Focus, and Support Helped Sarah During Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

After having light inconsistent contractions for several weeks, I knew I was really in labor when I had to truly stop, breath, and focus during the first few contractions.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

This was my third unmedicated birth so I knew what to expect and reminded myself that the pain has a purpose and it doesn't last forever. Having a home birth gave me no option other than a natural unmedicated birth.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Turning to God, asking for the strength, focus, and support were my most intentional and helpful things. I focused on breathing and the strength I have as a woman to get me through.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

That I had a boy! My mom feelings were that the baby was a girl. How quick it was. From beginning of active labor at 1am to birth at 1:39am. Never having made it to 38 weeks with my 3 other children, I was also surprised with how long he stayed in, 39 weeks and 3 days!

  • Believe and trust your instincts. You have this amazing God given power to create, grow, and deliver life. Trust that your body and baby will work together to achieve the goal. Pain is temporary and focusing inward on your strength and inner calm will help you get through.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Counter pressure applied by my husband was the only real pain relief.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    Hands and knees.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Amazing! Truly a feeling that I'm not able to put into words. You feel this sense of pride in having birthed a tiny human being after caring for it for so long, loving it without seeing it which is the only time you ever have such an experience.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Believe and trust your instincts. You have this amazing God given power to create, grow, and deliver life. Trust that your body and baby will work together to achieve the goal. Pain is temporary and focusing inward on your strength and inner calm will help you get through.
