Breathing Exercises And Listening To Birth Affirmation Helped India During Her Natural Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had just left my 39 week doctor's appointment, and I started feeling REAL contractions. I knew this was early labor because they were 15 minutes apart and then 10 minutes apart and finally 5 minutes apart by that same night. It wasn't until my water broke the next morning that I KNEW my baby was coming soon.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

For me, the most challenging part was getting stitches after the delivery. I had to endure that process three times because the tear was a lot deeper than they first thought. My contractions weren't that bad and the pushing phase felt like the biggest poop of my life! I was just ready to bond with my baby and breastfeed him, but getting stitched up that many times prevented me from doing so as long as I would have liked in the beginning.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Breathing exercises. I practiced breathing to my birthing playlist a ton before D-Day actually came. I also listened to Mama Natural's birthing affirmations, which helped me relax and focus mentally.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I didn't expect pushing to be how it was. I was ready to push him out and see him, but I had to slow down because everything was happening so fast. I had expected a simple and easy birth, but I still was in awe at how fast and simple everything happened for me as a first time mom.

  • It's so important to prepare and make your mind up about what you want to do. Of course, keep your options open in case things don't go as planned, but ultimately prepare and plan for your natural childbirth.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

It was helpful for me to listen to the same song, breathe, rock and focus on something else during my contractions.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I had so badly wanted to give birth on all fours, but with everything happening so fast I ended up on my back.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

I had expected this feeling of euphoria, but I felt more relief than anything. I was glad that he was in my arms and that we were both healthy.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

It's so important to prepare and make your mind up about what you want to do. Of course, keep your options open in case things don't go as planned, but ultimately prepare and plan for your natural childbirth. Some people may try to discourage you, however don't allow those comments to make you feel like you can't do what your body was created to do naturally.
