Birth Stories

Staying Active Helped Brittany During Her Birth Center Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I was 41 weeks and 3 days pregnant. It was about 4am, on Mother's Day, and I was googling "Do contractions make you feel like you have to poop?". Turns out, yes, a contraction can feel like that and it had been happening about every 20 minutes. I waited about an hour before waking up my husband, thinking that I might not actually be in labor.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

It's hard to say since I have nothing to compare my natural birth to. It was painful at times, pushing was hard and towards the end I felt like I couldn't do it. Although I assume most women, natural or not, experience that too.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I stayed relatively active and I wasn't over eating. The further I got into my third trimester the harder it was to stay healthy though. Also I took a birthing class where I learned a lot about labor and how it progresses. As far as mental preparation I read Ina May Gaskins 'Guide to Childbirth'. There are so many empowering birth stories and great information in that book.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

Probably how long it took. I was in labor for 12 hours. I know a lot of women are in labor much longer than that, but I just thought it would be quicker.

  • Totally indescribable. Definitely the best moment of my life.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I think being able to move around, the birthing pool, and when my husband would apply pressure to my hips.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

The very last second I was moved to the bed on my back. Just before that I was squatting.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Totally indescribable. Definitely the best moment of my life.
