Balance Ball Helped Janelle During Her Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had been having prodromal labor for over two weeks but it wasn't until I had that all too familiar cramping with back pain did I think I was finally in labor. I actually called my midwife at 3am and had her come to my house because the contractions were about 3 minutes apart and they woke me up from a dead sleep. But once she arrived, everything slowed down once again and she returned home around 9am. When she checked me, I wasn't even 3cm and maybe 50% effaced. It was discouraging but she told me she would come back when I felt like I needed her.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing about going natural is not knowing when the baby is going to be born. When you are induced or have a scheduled C-section, you know when you are going to have your baby. When you are going natural, you just don't know.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I loved having my balance ball to labor with.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

For this delivery, my contractions spaced out just before I delivered. I had never had that happen to me with my other labors. My midwife said that it is a pretty normal occurrence and probably happened because I was so relaxed.

  • Relax and stay calm. If you go into labor dreading the "pain" you will experience a more difficult labor. If you stay calm and relaxed your body will be efficient with the contractions making the process that much easier.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

The balance ball was the best. I was able to kneel and lean on it and rock back it forth during contractions. It was very comfortable.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I ended up delivery on my hands and knees leaning up against the balance ball. It was by far my best delivery.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

She felt so small compared to some of my other children. I loved being able to bring her up to my chest immediately and not have someone else place her there.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Relax and stay calm. If you go into labor dreading the "pain" you will experience a more difficult labor. If you stay calm and relaxed your body will be efficient with the contractions making the process that much easier. You can watch my birth here: https://youtu.be/dyc27viE7bw
