Birth Stories

Hannah Had Experience as a L&D RN

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

Evening of 6/2. I had membrane sweep that morning (39weeks). Lost mucous plug before that appointment. Had painful contractions all day, but would go away if I rested. That evening they picked up and intensified.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Trying to stay present and rational. Trying not to give into fear.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Watch birth videos. I’m also a L&D RN, so just watching birth and women coping was very encouraging

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How fast it was! Less than 2 hours. Pushed for 8 minutes. This is my 3rd precipitous birth. So I guess not that surprising! But the back labor this time was awful. Position changes were so helpful

  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

    Deep breathing/moaning/counting

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Like heaven. The feeling never gets old. A flood of emotions.

  • What did you name your baby, and why?

Sophie Kate. Kate is after my grandmother (Kathryn which is also my middle name.)

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

You can do it. Prepare yourself with coping strategies. Ask questions. Remember your body was created to do this.
