Having a Great Support System and a Birth Plan Helped Laura During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I started contractions at 3 AM and tracked them all day. Once they got to 3 minutes apart (around 8 PM) I decided to call my doctors office and go to the hospital.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing for me was the transition stage, I didn't believe I could go farther without medications.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

The most helpful thing I did was read! I read as much as I could on natural childbirth, the benefits and what to anticipate. I spoke about my desires openly and made it clear to others that I would like their support in my decision to go natural. I kept repeating to myself "my body is meant to do this" "I am doing a wonderful thing for my baby and I right now."

  • What surprised you about your birth?

The most surprising thing was how fast things progressed for me compared to my first childbirth. I was induced the first time and it was the typical hospital birth. This time it was my way, it was quick!

  • Trust your body! stop doubting what your body is capable of, it can do amazing things when you give yourself the opportunity!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

The whirlpool tub helped so much as well as constant movement! Breathing also helped me get through my contractions more than I ever thought it would. My husband stepped up and helped me, he had me match his breathing, kept eye contact and was there for every step and every breath. I was so amazed at how he was during the labor and delivery. I felt like we have become closer as a couple through that experience.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I ended up on my back. I started pushing while standing and was told to lay down. I didn't have time to tell them I didn't want to be on my back, it all happened so fast!

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It felt amazing! She came out and I immediately started taking my gown off to get her on my chest! She was quick to nurse and she layed there for over an hour. It was amazing!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

I would say do your research, remind yourself of the benefits, have a great support system and make a birth plan! Take classes and get a doula if possible! Most of all, trust your body! stop doubting what your body is capable of, it can do amazing things when you give yourself the opportunity!
