When did you realize you were really in labor?
I was having contractions that were 30 minutes apart consistently from 0200-0700. I went for an 800m swim and the contractions continued as soon as I was out of the water.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
This time around the most challenging part was the back labor. My son was posterior position and that was a whole different type of labor pain I had not experienced. Even after swimming he continued to turn back into this position.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I truly believe the best thing a woman can do is keep her mind positive! Surround yourself with other women that have positive things to say about their births and keep you head there. I did hypnobirthing with my last pregnancy and used that to keep my head clear.

What surprised you about your birth?
How great it was to not be induced and experience a completely natural birth! The hospital staff at Naval Hospital Okinawa was so supportive of my natural birth plan. I felt so accomplished.

I have 6 children and there is nothing better than a natural birth. I've had an epidural and the healing process takes so much more out of you. Going natural allows you immediate mobility. Being able to walk around made me feel so great!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Keeping my body relaxed, my shoulders, my jaw. Breathing calmly and humming through each contraction. I had to keep reminding myself of these things and in doing so I was able to keep my mind off the contractions.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I ended up delivering on my right side with my left leg elevated by the nurse. She suggested it because the pain in my back was so bad. As soon as I was able to go from a squat to this side position my baby's head immediately popped out!

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Holding my son was the most fulfilling moment ever! He was such a handsome little guy and I was overwhelmed with love.
