Birth Stories

Kim's Midwife-Assisted Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

It had been about six hours or so of moderate contractions that were about 7-10 minutes apart and then my midwife assisted in breaking my water. Holy cow did that bring on true labor!!
Unfortunately after a short 2 hours more of having contractions
About 3 minutes apart, did my labor pain turn to back labor. My husband and midwife were there through it all. I continued to labor for 20 more hours. We used the tub in our room which was so nice, every other minute while I wasn't have a contraction;) and the shower which was what saved my mental strength an gave me the endurance I needed to push through.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing was the unpredictable nature of it all. I was surrounded by true love and support. I knew I was going to have this angel at some point, but not knowing actually when and actually how was the hardest part for me.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I absolutely loved my hypnobirthing classes! It brought my husband and I such a piece of calm. Learning all about the birthing process and learning all different techniques really helped us get through so many challenging moments of my sons birth.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I think the most incredibly surprising part of it all is just how strong women are. I felt like a warrior. Unstoppable. Empowered and determined. Having my husband next to me through it all has definitely led him to believe I could beat anyone in a fight!

  • I was surrounded by true love and support. I knew I was going to have this angel at some point, but not knowing actually when and actually how was the hardest part for me.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I loved the being in the shower. It made me focus on the water hitting my back.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

After trying everything that my midwife and husband suggested our baby's heart rate dropped dramatically and the cord was wrapped around his neck quite tightly. They quickly gave me an epidural and helped assist as best they could to get our son out with out having to have surgery. We did it!

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It made me realize what a true miracle this life is. How blessed can one woman be.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Stay strong and remember that everyone goes through it all just like you. We are warriors!!
