Knowing Her Birth Plan and Having Her OB On Board Helped Kellen During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

At my 36 week appointment, I was diagnosed with polyhydramnios. I had been dilated to 6 and 90% effaced with contractions 8 minutes apart for two weeks. I left the appointment and stopped to vote on my way home. My water broke in the voting booth and I knew then I was obviously in labor!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Oddly enough, emptying my bladder. I’ve always had kidney and bladder issues, but this was the second birth it stopped me from progressing! If I couldn’t get my bladder empty, the baby wouldn’t move down to the birth canal. We did finally get it all sorted out and baby was born healthy.

Know my birth plan and have my OB on board. She’s super supportive!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

Happening a month early. This was the first time my water broke on its own and it happened at 36 weeks. It had me shook, but my body knew what it was doing. I focused and went along for the ride!

  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

    Focusing and quiet during contractions.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    Ben. It’s a family name.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
