Learning Breathing Techniques Helped Kaliopi During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

    I realized I was really in labor when my contractions started hurting in my back and I had my bloody show. I was only hours from being induced.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

    I was unfortunately unable to go natural though that was my goal and I tried so hard. I was stuck at 3 cm for an entirely night and part of a morning and my contractions were incredibly strong.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

    The most helpful thing I did was learn breathing techniques. It helped me greatly during my hours of unmedicated labor until I opted for pain medication.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

    The need for pain medication surprised me greatly along with the lack of pain during pushing. I needed to push so badly that it was a huge relief when I could.

  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

    Breathing techniques, stadol, and an epidural all helped me during labor and delivery.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    I delivered on my back with my mom and husband holding my legs.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    It was the most amazing and overwhelming feeling of my life.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

    Go in with an open mind and confidence in yourself!
