Reading Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, Prenatal Yoga, and Staying Active Helped Britni During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

While making dinner. I had been having cramping all day but it didn't really become obvious that I was in labor until I was making 2 pans of enchiladas to take to my parents' for dinner.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Since I can't compare what it's like to not have a natural birth, it's hard to say. I would say staying relaxed during the transition period is challenging.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, prenatal yoga, and staying active.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How quickly it went! I went from having contractions every 5 minutes to every 23 seconds and then gave birth in under 20 minutes.

  • Prepare! Our bodies were made to do this but I can see how tempting it would be to accept interventions when they are so readily available and it is the norm to use them.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

    Visualization, breathing, swaying.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Traditional- on my back. I was in an ambulance and was strapped to a stretcher so I didn't have any other options.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    Wonderful!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Prepare! Our bodies were made to do this but I can see how tempting it would be to accept interventions when they are so readily available and it is the norm to use them. Read books, go to natural childbirth classes, practice yoga, stay active, eat well, hire a doula, have a plan, etc. Hiring a doula is extremely helpful to help you keep your focus and guide you through labor. Also, accept and give in to the pain- fighting it is counterproductive.
