Yoga and Walking Almost Every Day Helped Taylor During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had been inconsistently contracting for two weeks and finally had to be induced as I couldn't go past 42 weeks. My water broke 7 hours after starting pitocin and that's when things really kicked in.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

I was so disappointed that I couldn't have the completely natural birth I planned in the birth center without any drugs. Changing my mindset and allowing the birth to happen either way was challenging. Not to mention getting through pitocin without painkillers!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Yoga, yoga, yoga. I practiced this and walked almost every day especially in my last trimester. I attribute this to my success in pushing out a very large baby as a very small person.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

Although it felt like it had derailed from my original plan, I was surprised that I was still able to feel so empowered and supported.

  • Create a support team that will encourage you to stick to your plan even if things get rough. Make your desires very clear to all staff and to your team so that they can advocate for you.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I used hypnobirthing strategies for the most part. Being in the shower, rocking my head back and forth with jaw open, and giving big and loud yogic "Ha" breaths worked wonders.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    I was on my back.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

I was excited and relieved, a little overwhelmed and quite confused that this was actually my child. It took some sleep and a day or two to feel the amazing deep love I have for him. My heart is now overwhelmed with love!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Create a support team that will encourage you to stick to your plan even if things get rough. Make your desires very clear to all staff and to your team so that they can advocate for you. Also prime your body with exercise, good foods, acupuncture, dates and red raspberry leaf tea.
