Reading, Researching, Asking Questions and Building a Support Team Helped Adrien During Her Birth Center Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

At lunch with my mom, husband, and daughter after my 41 week appointment with my midwife and a visit to my chiropractor!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Putting together a strong support team! Ultimately it was my husband, my doula (chosen blindly through a silent auction at our local Latch On event last year!), and the midwife (one of five in a birthing center based practice).

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Read, research, ask questions, build a support team!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

When I got into the birthing tub, my contractions slowed down significantly which I did not anticipate!

  • Listen to your body! Get a good team together! Know your options and advocate for what you want but trust the professionals! Enjoy every moment of it!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

My favorite pain relief strategy and position for contractions was partner supported standing with his arms around me under my arms with my back to his chest and dropping my weight for him to support. We also used some essential oils and birth music playlists developed by a board certified music therapist.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

In the birthing tub sitting with my back against the side and legs spread!

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Amazing!!! At 41+1 I had begun to doubt that she was ever going to come out!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Listen to your body! Get a good team together! Know your options and advocate for what you want but trust the professionals! Enjoy every moment of it!
