Remembering That Women's Bodies Were Made For Birthing Helped Kristina During Her Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

My boyfriend and I were walking the dogs by the river and my contractions just kept getting stronger and stronger. I stopped walking and grabbed my boyfriend and told him we need to get home NOW.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Knowing that it was going to hurt.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Remembering that our bodies were made for this. Women have done it for thousands and thousands of years at home without pain relief and without machines to help. You have to trust in yourself and the process. Know and accept the fact it will be the hardest thing you've ever done and the rest just follows.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How quick it was. It was my first child birth and it was only 4 hours long!

  • Trust your body, your mind, and trust the process. Never doubt yourself.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Breathing! And changing positions when necessary.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Squatting in the bathroom. We planned on a water birth but the rust at the bottom of the water heater contaminated the water so we moved it upstairs. The spare bedroom was the plan but we moved it to the bathroom.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Such a relief! She was 10 days past due date and I was getting impatient! So finally holding her was absolutely incredible.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Trust your body, your mind, and trust the process. Never doubt yourself.
