Taking Mama Natural Birth Class Helped Teagan During Her Natural Hospital Birth

  • Video Interview With Teagan

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I was 38 weeks pregnant. That morning we had went to town and saw our older children and went to a college basketball game where I walked several stairs and started to experience pain in my upper thighs. After traveling home that day, I stepped out of the vehicle and my water broke. We lived about an hour from the hospital and I knew that I wasn’t having contractions yet and knew I had several hours before I need to start any anabiotic’s with my water breaking. So I chose to labor at home as long as I could. I showed, I ate, I took a nap, and 6 hours later I started having mild contractions. I didn’t wake my husband up for a few more hours. I labored on my birthing ball and in the bath tub very peacefully for 3 hours before heading to the hospital. I text my doctor and called my doula to keep them in the loop. Due to how far away I was from the hospital our plan with our doula was to just meet there.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

I truly don’t believe that going natural was challenging for me. I had the perfect mindset and my body was healthy. The last few hours going from an 8 to a 10 were a little intense as my husband would say. A little uncomfortable, but definitely doable and worth it. The last final pushes I needed a little extra encouragement from my doctor and my husband that I was strong enough and I had made it this far. I was so proud of my body and my baby for working together!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I took the mama natural birthing class along with classes from my Doula. I also read about Hypnobirthing techniques. As I prepared for my birth, I took several baths towards the end, and would have my favorite chapters of my Hypnobirthing books on audio being repeated, while I was in the bathtub, so that I could visualize a healthy mindset. I also worked with my husband, doula, and doctor to create the perfect birthing plan for me. When getting to the hospital and knowing my delivery nurse I developed a great relationship with her by discussing my birthing plan.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

The power of the woman’s body is absolutely amazing. There are parts of my labor that I know were intense my Doula and my husband have a little bit different stories than I do and all I can remember is it being so powerful and blissful.

  • Trust your body! Prepare for it and trust it. Your mindset is everything and find that happy place, believe that you are powerful enough. And always work with your baby! And lastly create yourself a support team that’s best for you and your husband.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I had a birthing comb that I absolutely swear by. Also changing positions and pressure on my hips with help from my husband and doula was key for me.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It felt like a miracle and completely unreal. It was the most beautiful thing after our journey together!

  • What did you name your baby, and why?

Well, we didn’t name our baby for several hours actually. We successfully kept the gender unknown until delivery and so we had a few names for each gender picked. Our doula stayed for a few hours and helped get us settled and we felt like the name conversation needed to be just with us. We choose to name our strong amazing little boy “Tallon Mack.” Tallon being a name that I loved my whole pregnancy but my husband wasn’t to fond of. Mack being after my maiden name and a nickname we called my great grandma. We wanted a strong unique name that started with a T because we both have T names.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Trust your body! Prepare for it and trust it. Your mindset is everything and find that happy place, believe that you are powerful enough. And always work with your baby! And lastly create yourself a support team that’s best for you and your husband.
