  1. It was Scottish like my husband.

  2. I had heard the name somewhere (an actor? an author?) and liked it. It turned out to be Scottish, and my father immigrated to the US from Scotland as a child with his family. It is common in the UK but not as common here, which we liked. We also thought it would be likely to be mispronounced, although a lot of people mispronounce it as Cay-lum we have discovered. It also means “Dove King,” and we liked that it had a peaceful meaning.

    • My son is 10 now and we named him Calum, with only one L. That is the more typical Scottish spelling. I thought it would keep people from pronouncing it Call-um but instead they mis-pronounce it Cay-lum. It is frustrating, isn’t it? Oh well! What I do is tell people to think of the “a” in California and that usually helps them remember. ?
