Share Your Thoughts 3 Comments Eamon Oct 26 at 7:33 pm I have the name Eamon and I’m the only person who has this spell of Eamon in my school people would laugh about my name being really close to Amen but I would correct them and say it is Ay-man I really like having this name in America since it is unique and most people only know 1 Eamon in my life and that is me Reply Meghan Aug 16 at 10:27 am I knew I wanted an Irish first name and I had a strong preference for one starting with a vowel (because my nephews, Ike and Arlo, both have vowel names and I knew this would delight my dad). I also like the sound of ?amon (which I spell with the traditional fada over the E) — it has a lilting singsonginess to it that appeals. I picked it in part because it can’t be easily reduced to a nickname (not a huge fan of Mikey or Jimmy or Jack). There’s a kind of quiet dignity to a name that can’t be reduced. Finally, I liked the meaning behind it. Because my husband is catholic we had to choose a saint’s name. St. ?amon was a protector of both knowledge (defended the abbey where monks came from across Ireland to be educated) and the woods (there’s a great story of him miraculously saving a stag from hunting dogs). The only potential drawbacks that I can see are (1) that people might not know how to pronounce it (not a big deal) and (2) that kids might make “amen” jokes (but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it!). Reply Eamon Sep 29 at 3:34 pm My name is Eamon and I’m 32 years old now. You are spot on with your 2 potential drawbacks hahaha. I’d say people don’t know how to pronounce it about 85% of the time but when they find out how to say it they compliment me on having a cool/unique/uncommon name pretty much 100% of the time. Also I was raised catholic so I got the “Amen” jokes something fierce while I was growing up. As a child I didn’t really like my name because of the extra attention it drew… Plus the “Amen” thing got old fast for me but you’d swear that every single person who made the joke thought they were soo clever and somehow they thought they were the first one to come up with it… As an adult I have grown to love my name and I feel as though it really fits me. There aren’t very many Eamons in the world and I’m proud to be one of them! Great choice, if I do say so myself ?
