At the time he was born, I was a graduate student at University of Hawaii, and my life revolved around school, but also surfing, kayaking and other outdoor adventures. Hawaii and the people there were deeply formative to me. Surfing was life! Kainoa is a Hawaiian name relating to the spirit of the sea. A popular name in Hawaii, but not in Arizona, where my son grew up after I finished school. Around middle school he began going by just “Kai“. He got tired of teachers mispronouncing his name, and getting teased by kids who said it sounded girly. By shortening the name to Kai, he still kept the unique and strong vibe of his name. Kainoa is a beautiful, strong name! But I love “Kai” as well! The memories of Hawaii and his early years living there are rooted. The ocean echos in the name, as well as strength and natural beauty.
