  1. Love my granddaughter Eilah’s name. As unique as her mother’s name, Shawn.

  2. My granddaughter’s name is Eilah. My daughter picked it over Isla, because in the US most people would definitely mispronounced it as “is-la” rather than “eye-la”. People still seem baffled by how to pronounce it even when you point out it is exactly like Eileen but with a “lah” on the end rather than “leen”. But my daughter named her Eilah only after looking up the Hebrew meaning. We like it because it is unique, but very old with a pretty sound and meaning.

  3. It actually means much more than “Oak Tree” and is a word in many Jewish songs and prayers. The pronunciation is more like “A-lah” not “Isla.” Phonetically in English, it’s a subtle AE-laah. It’s a beautiful name with deep cultural connotations for people who belong to that culture.

    • Thanks for your help in understanding the Hebrew pronunciation for future families who choose this name! In English, the pronunciation can be either way! Like Eileen. Although the other Eilah’s we know also pronounce it like Isla. And an ae-lah like you mentioned was spelling Elah. I’m sure it matters which language of origin each family is. But I’m happy to tell my daughter that there are lots of eilah endings in Hebrew and how they sound! Perhaps she’ll change her pronunciation when she’s older if she wishes who knows!

  4. We chose this name and spelling (sounds like Isla) because its Hebrew origin means “oak tree”. We love the strong name meaning! So far, in only 2 months, many many people have mispronounced her name while others think the spelling is more phonetic.

    • This is exactly why my parents chose my name! Your daughter is going to have a great time with all the random mispronunciations, including Elijah and ill-ee-a.
