  1. My husband and I met in Ireland and had a long distance relationship for over a year before he moved to this country to be with me. We welcomed our firstborn recently and decided to name her Saoirse, as both an homage to his homeland and because it means something we both hold dear. Saoirse in the old Irish language means “freedom” or “liberty”.

I love the meaning and history behind the name, as well as how it sounds. I don’t love that we will have to constantly correct people on spelling and pronounciation, but that’s a small price to pay for something so beautiful and close to our hearts.

  2. It means freedom in gaelic! Chose it to honor my gaelic ancestry and because we think it’s beautiful! It is pronounced very differently than how it’s spelled though, so it’s been a bit challenging for some people to pronounce and remember it!

  3. We had a few names picked out and were waiting to meet the baby and learn the gender before settling on one. We paired a unique irish name with a traditional English middle name so she could choose to transition to the more common name later if she wanted to.

  4. We chose this name because it is the Irish Gaelic word for “freedom”. We love the US and the liberties we have here. Even more, my husband and I both have ancestors from Ireland who immigrated to the US for those freedoms. It’s impossible for other people to spell and pronounce, but so far everyone has loved the unique sound of it. To me, names should be a tribute to something important to you. Our daughter’s name tells the story of our family journey and our personal values.

  5. My husband is 100% Irish and he has loved the girls name “Saoirse” for a baby, since he was 15! How could I argue with that? Before she was born, at about 30 weeks, she started to show me that she was actually “Saoirse”. We never shared her name and didn’t choose it officially, until we left the hospital. She’s Saoirse Frances, which is after both of our paternal grandfathers. They were/are both named Frank ‘Francis’.

  6. Hi! I wanted to let you know that the pronunciation on Saoirse is wrong. It’s an Irish name, and doesn’t follow English phonetics. It is said “SEER-sha”.
    Thanks!

    • Being named Saoirse, I’ve always had to deal with people saying things like “Hi, Soreshee!” Just to pick on me. I have been complemented a lot of times about how beautiful my name is, more times than I’ve been picked on.
So yes. I do recommend this name! Along with Shibon and Aiofe!
