Hypatia
A feminine combination of intellectual prowess and physical beauty, in allusion to the female philosopher of Alexandria who, because of her intimacy with the pagan prefect of the city, was unpopular with the local Christians. In 415 A.D., an incited mob dragged her to a Christian church where she was disrobed and cut to pieces with oyster shells. The remains were burned piecemeal as an expression of religious enthusiasm.
