“The exotic one; the stranger.” From the Greek barbaros, strange, foreign, etc. To the ancient Greeks and Romans, anyone who did not speak their language, or did not speak it well, was “barbarous,” without the implications which the term bears now. It merely designated the person as a “barbar” or stranger.
