The personification of the delicate huntress, in Greek mythology a ravish- ingly beautiful maiden who challenged men to defeat her in a race, the reward being her glory but death the penalty for failure. Hippomenes, a worthy Greek youth, was destined to relish her charms, after defeating her in a foot race by dropping three golden apples along the route, which she stopped to pick up.
