I thought in Romans it was a male? But I didn’t care. I wanted to name her after my great grandmother Julian. But a cousin already used it so I found this and knew instantly it was hers. Reply Elisha Cremeans Jul 26 at 5:53 pm Jesus gave me this name! I was reading my Bible in the book of Romans. I read her name, and it lit up like a light off the page. That incident really caught my attention. Maybe I am pregnant, God? Was my first thought. My husband and I liked the name Julia but didn’t like how common it was. A day later I was feeding my one-year-old boy, and prayed, Jesus, who was Junia and what does her name mean? I had the Christian radio on in the background, and AS SOON as I prayed that in my mind, I heard the pastor read off the EXACT verse in Romans talking about Junia I ready the day before! The Preacher began a tangent on who she was, and how she knew the opposite Paul. I read later that day her name is a form of Julia, and Nia, which I thought would be cute to call her, means Light, and my nickname/shortened verson on my name, also means Light. I was pretty confident I was pregnant with a baby girl at this point, and sure enough, I was 🙂 She is 7 now and fulfills her name perfectly. What I don’t like: It is hard for people to pronounce sometimes. We pronounce it, “Jue-nee-ah” and she gets “June-ya” which sounds like Junior. Reply Melissa Apr 15 at 11:17 pm We named our daughter Junia in 2018, but we mostly call her “Juni“. We gave her the name because of the biblical reference in Romans 16:7, and love the idea of Junia being a respected female apostle. Reply Mick Mar 6 at 7:01 am There is no reference to Junia being an apostle in Romans 16:7. It simply says that she. among others. was with the apostles, as were other women. Women were very much the support team for both Jesus and the apostles – never appointed anywhere as apostles. That she was undoubtedly respected is not in question and the other women with the apostles were likewise. Reply Melissa Apr 8 at 2:22 am While this phrase cannot be translated definitively, the clearest reading of the text is that she is included in the group of people called apostles. The only reason to suppose she isn’t is bias of the reader. Church leaders a few centuries ago were so convinced that it meant she was an apostle that they intentionally misgendered her (switching to a masculine suffix to become “Junias”) to prevent people from thinking women could be in leadership. You can choose to believe otherwise, but it’s impudent to choose to “correct” someone from a valid belief about what they named their daughter.
