Aubrey Name Meaning

Aubrey has staked her claim in the hearts of parents with her mischievous meaning and trendy feel. Derived from the Germanic Alberich, Aubrey means “elf ruler.”

Originally a male moniker, little Aubrey crossed over onto the female charts where she has climbed the ranks steadily through the years with her easy style and sweet sound. Unisex names names like Aubrey are an ongoing trend, as Ashley and Taylor had parents swooning in the 1990s long before today’s Avery and Madison gained traction.

Aubrey is quite versatile, pairing well with a multitude of middle names as well as surnames. Aubrey Sky sounds just as sweet as Aubrey Catherine, no? She’s easy to pronounce and spell, though she does come in a few other spellings like Aubree and Aubrie, though they’re less commonly seen. Parents love the nicknames Bree and Breezy, and who wouldn’t? Of course she can stand alone in full as well for parents keen on avoiding shortened versions.

Aubrey feels young at heart thanks to her sweet -ee ending, but parents should have no fear when it comes to her aging with grace. Plenty of grown Aubreys are wearing the name easily into adulthood like singer Aubrey O’Day and actress Aubrey Peebles.

  1. I love my name but prefer my middle name.

  2. I love the name Aubriana being that was my name and I was very strong and passionate. I was also a Gemini. Now I am college bound and dream of becoming a lawyer!

  3. I love that is sounds feminine, it is easy to pronounce and spell as well. Named our Daughter Aubrey Elise!

  4. I like the name and my friend helped me pick it out and also me and my partner both liked it.

  5. We were between 2 names for pretty much my whole pregnancy. Aubrey means powerful elf in Welsh, and the other name we were considering means Sweetheart. We thought we would know as soon as we saw her, but still couldn’t decide!

Aubrey decided it was her birthing time at 35w +5d. She came quick and wr had a wonderful, unmedicated birth in the hospital, while we were planning a home birth. Part of her coming early meant a minimum 48 hour hospital stay.

Aubrey’s blood glucose levels ended up dropping 🙁 so she got poked for 24 hours. We were one test away from her having to go to NICU, but she pulled through, and dodged it! She overcame a lot to come into the world, I had health issues and her dad had a vasectomy (she was a pleasant complete suprise) so powerful elf it was! And it suits her perfectly ?

  6. I love, love, love the name Aubrey! It’s so beautiful just liken the song by the vocal group, Bread. I will always love this name. Never had any children.

  7. We knew from the start that she would share my middle name, a family name, Myrle. And we first liked Chloe as a first name. We liked how a two syllable name that ended with an “e” sounded before Myrle. So when we moved away from Chloe after trying it out for a few weeks, we thought three other options and my husband said “what about Aubrey?” We didn’t know anyone else with that name and wanted something unique so it just stuck!

  8. Just really like that name

  9. My husband came up with the idea to name our daughter Aubrey. My dad, who i was very close to, was named Aubrey and he died about two months after my husband and I were married. Since it works well for boys or girls my husband thought it would be meaningful to name her after her grandfather, giving her a small piece of him. Of course this was a precious idea to me and really touched my mom, too. Now that she is here I can’t imagine calling her anything else, and honestly, we never considered any other names. It was the easiest decision we made. ?

  10. Its just a beautiful Name andvit suited her well

  11. We love the name Aubrey, but then found that her full name is pretty common. (Aubrey Rose) We called her Bree a lot more often than we anticipated and therefore wish we would have spelled it Aubree instead.

    • This happened to us as well. Didn’t know how common Aubrey was when we picked it! But we still love it and think it’s a beautiful name
