Audrey Name Meaning

An Old Hollywood glamazon that still leaves hearts soaring to this day, Audrey means “noble strength.” Her English roots are well planted, but she’s easily traveled across the pond to conquer the charts for baby girl names in the U.S.

Most commonly associated with actress Audrey Hepburn, the name is synonymous with class and femininity. She’s no doubt vintage, aging like a fine wine, avoiding the granny label placed on some other names of her heyday. With the rise of antique classics like Amelia and Evelyn, Audrey is faring well in U.S. popularity, keeping her head held high and standing out among a sea of modern monikers.

While Audrey is blessed with the adorable long E ending coveted in baby girl name circles, she’s hardly a cutesy choice like Daisy or Emmy. She’s distinguished, mature enough for a grown woman and child alike. A little Audrey is wise beyond her years, elegant and refined with little time for shenanigans. After all, she’s got the world at her feet at she knows it. She’s also a literary name, appearing in Shakespeare’s As You Like It and in Audrey, a novel by Mary Johnston.

Audrey has a number of gorgeous variants including Audra and Audrea. She can also be spelled as Audrie or Audree, though her classic spelling is most common.

When I was younger, I sometimes imagined my name was Audrey Green. I love how there are many ways how to spell it also. We are spelling it the normal way. I’m pregnant with twins. One boy, one girl. The girl’s name is Audrey and the boy’s name is August because my partner’s dead sister was born in August.
