Evan Name Meaning

A well-known name that’s avoided overuse, Evan is a handsome pick with effortless style. He’s short and sweet, a great alternative to the similar mega-popular picks Liam and Noah.

With boy-next-door appeal and endless likability, Evan doesn’t need all the bells and whistles to get your attention. He has a dashing sound with a simple spelling, avoiding pronunciation issues. As the Welsh form of John, he’s also a great way to honor a family member with the moniker.

Evan has the enviable ability to age gracefully, never feeling childish or too mature. He’s perfect for a spry young boy on the go and a hardworking adult as well. He’s also immune to feeling dated, consistently ranking over the years to avoid feeling trendy like other names that spike in popularity but taper off quickly.

Evan’s sound may seem familiar, as his rhyming friends Kevin and Devin have also dotted the charts in use along with him. While they have slowed in usage, Evan continues to go strong, remaining a familiar face in playgroups.

A cheery boy with more than enough heart to go around, little Evan is always striving to make those around him happy. He has a natural glow to him that draws people in, making him a natural entertainer whether he’s juggling everything in sight or popping a wheelie on his new bike.

  2. Our 2nd son is Evan Charles Isaac. He is named after his two Uncle John’s and the John’s in the Bible. “God is gracious” is a wonderful meaning.

    • Johns not John’s

  3. He is our 5th boy (Eli, Rowan, Theo, Wesley). We’ve had a running name list the whole 7 years and Evan was never on it. At about 32 hours old, it randomly popped in my head on the way back from a 3am bathroom trip – Mom brain!! I thought it was so fitting and a strong name you don’t hear everyday. The meaning is “God is Gracious” which is also so fitting for our Rainbow baby! Everyone loves it so far!!

  4. .

  5. I love my name as it represents me very much a I am very pleased to be with God and his young warrior and a everlasting ruler:D

  6. My Brother Name Is Evan Alano He Is The Best Brother In The Whole Entire World And Universe He Is 6 Years Old Boy

  8. Evan is a Welsh name and my husband is Welsh. It means “God is Good” and God is Good because he blessed us with our miracle baby.

  9. We already had two boys with E names so wanted to include baby boy number three in the pattern.
We liked that Evan is a form of the Bible name John, meaning God is gracious. It is a sound, classy name and we feel it suites our little guy well.

  10. In the book Digging the Wells of Revival by Lou Engle he mentions, “Name them, claim them and frame them for life”. So, we chose the name Evan because of it’s meaning. We named our first son Ethan because of the meaning as well. We wanted to give our sons strong and meaningful names and also as brothers to be similar in sound. Ethan; is Hebrew in origin and most often means “strong,” “safe,” “solid,” and “firm.” These are characteristics seen in Ethan, “the Ezrahite,” from the Bible. He is also viewed as being wise. Evan; is the Welsh form of John which is the English form of the Hebrew “Yohanan” meaning “Jehovah has favored” or “Yahweh is gracious” from “hanan” “he was gracious”.

  11. We had a few other names picked as possible names and Evan never came up previously but when he was born we first thought of the name and new it suited him best

  12. Loved the name meaning of Evan. It means “The Lord is gracious”

  13. We have another boy whose name also starts with an E, so we wanted to choose another E name for this baby as well. I like Evan because it is short and pretty easy to pronounce.

  14. When does a baby start sitting up mine’s almost 7 months old and he still ain’t sitting up yet

  15. I love my name Evans it has has been affecting me positively as said here.
Everybody loves me and the always Evans me all the time
This is a name that would be kept for my first son in the future??

  16. We tend to lean towards “E” names. Evan actually wasn’t our first choice (Ethan was!) But when a close relative named her child Ethan we had to figure out something else!! Now we just love his name, and even has a powerful Christian meaning behind it.

  17. The name Evan Thomas has been in our family since the 1600s. Most recently my father was Evan Thomas, I the same, my son and grand son the same. Four straight generations. When I was young I really liked my name because no one else had it and it was easy to pronounce. When I was in the Navy I met some British Naval Officers in Hong Kong and they immediately started callIng me “taffy” when they heard my full name. Evan Thomas is VERY Welsh and the Brits call someone from Wales “taffy”. It may be good or bad, I don’t really care as I like the name Evan.

  18. I always loved the simplicity and beauty of the name. It’s got a V in it which makes it slightly more unique than your typical “John” but apparently it’s a version of John (my husband’s name). Also, when we looked it up, the Irish meaning (which is what I am) is “young fighter.” Combined with his middle name Alexander, “protector of the people,” I thought it was fitting. He’s a beautiful, strong boy that I hope to raise into a protective, philanthropic, benevolent man-as his name suggests. My sweet Evan Alexander.

  19. Evan popped in my head! His dads name is Adam, sometimes I mix them up. I didnt think anyone would mispronounce it, but they have! Evonne? What the heck. But overall, I love it.

  20. My Husband Chose The Name Evan .
To begin with, its very close to his name “Esteban
Secondly, Its a very unique Name.
His Middle Name Is Javier Which is My husbands Middle Name As well.
Evan Is a very short name and Has a Nice Meaning ” The Lord Is Gracious “

    • Omg my Spanish name is Esteban . I chose that name in Spanish because it seemed most similar to my name Evan.

  21. I wanted to have an E name for a boy since my daughter’s name starts with an E. Out of all the E names I liked Evan the best.

  22. My husband loved the name and it was a strong but sweet name. I have heard other kids at the park called it so it’s a common name but not too popular.

  23. My husband and I combed through every baby name list we could find, including a fun app called, “Baby Names.” (It is a bit like Tinder for baby names, where you and your partner individually swipe left or right for names you like or dislike, and the app notifies you when you have both liked the same name.) Ultimately, we chose a name, but when our little one was born, we tested it out for a few days and it just didn’t feel quite right. We went back to our list of top names we liked, calling him by each to test them out. Ultimately, we remembered the name Evan (which wasn’t even on our short list!), tried it out, and it stuck! My husband has Welsh heritage too, and the name Evan is a very Welsh name so his family really liked it. (Because of the name switch, we also changed his middle name to Thomas after my grandfather as it flowed better with Evan, so ultimately, both sides of our family were also really happy with the names we chose.)
