  1. Beware Adelaide, she lives in the pastures…

  2. My great aunt’s name was Adelaide but since she was very young and her dad gave her the nickname Jinky, she always went by that. Even at work! When I learned that as a child I thought ‘what a waste of a beautiful name!’ And decided I’d name my daughter that if I had a daughter.
My husband knew the story and was totally on board.
    Nickname for her is Delly.

  3. We wanted a rare, but classic name. We call our baby Adelaide but she can choose to be called Addie when she gets older if she would like. Adelaide is also the name of one of the 1000 islands in Canada. I grew up knowing that island and thinking the name was beautiful to hear and say.

  4. ADELAIDE RAE
When I was young, before I had known of the
Australian City, I had heard the name Adelaide from a song. It stuck with me, I thought it was pretty. The name is very old and not often heard any more, but still fitting for our times. It is sweet yet mature still. We chose Rae because her nickname for Adelaide is Addie and/or Della. My husband and I LOVED the sound of Della Rae / Addie Rae
I soon came to find out Adelaide, Australia was named after Queen Adelaide, a woman of high power who used her time and privilege to serve the community and care for the children. Adelaide means “Nobility”.

  5. I heard the name Adelaide and fell in love! I also like names that aren’t common and we don’t know anyone else with the name. Adelaide is a Hebrew name that means Graceful and noble. The name fits my sweet girl’s personality to a T! She is very calm and peaceful ?

  6. It means noble, lovely, adorned. Some other places say to “make lovely”

  7. We chose Adelaide because it was old, elegant, and no one else in our family had it. It means, “of noble kind.” I love that. We are going with the nickname Adele, which means, “nobility.” She’s our firstborn, and I love how empowering her name is.
The only thing I don’t like about the name Adelaide, is that the typical nickname is Addi, and there aren’t many good songs with the name Adelaide.

  8. We wanted a feminine name that was classy, timeless and had a cute nickname. We also found this deep in my husbands family tree which helped solidify the choice. We call her Addy; for short. ?

  9. I wanted a name that was old-fashioned, uncommon, but not completely obscure. My husband liked it because it’s the name of a song by Anberlin. I like that it sounds French and the nickname Addie. I also like the history and meaning of the name.

  10. Adelaide was not our first choice when choosing our daughter’s name. We love unique names but wanted something classic. I read the name Adelaide when searching for old French names. I fell in love. As I said “Adelaide” out loud, Claire came right after and it was perfect. And that’s how our sweet Adelaide Claire got her name!

  11. I first heard the name in a song that I thought was beautiful and then I kept seeing the name on Pinterest when I was looking for girls names that weren’t very common.

The only thing I don’t like about the name is that most people say her name wrong when they read it or hear it other than that I absolutely love the name.

Her nickname is Addie and Addie Cakes (like patty cake from the nursery rhyme)

  12. It is a family name, an excellent role model for her. Have found it is rather difficult for others to understand what her name is when either she or we as her parents say it.

  13. We wanted an ‘old’ name and one that was feminine. We didn’t want it in the Top 100. We also loved that combined with her middle name we could call her Addie Mae.

A few things we hadn’t considered: while Adelaide isn’t super popular in our region, with all the other Addisons, Adelines, and Such, the nickname Addie is pretty common. Also, for some reason many people think we say “Natalie” instead of “Adelaide”.

  14. As a teenager, I took a silly “What’s Your Old Lady Name?” quiz online. My result was “Adelaide,” a name I had never heard before. I decided that I would name my first car Adelaide. I did just that. I met my husband while that car was still in my life, thus he was aware of my fondness for the name. He also loved the name, as one of his favorite bands (Anberlin) had a song with the namesake. Before we were even married, we had decided that our first daughter would be named Adelaide. How funny is it that we two had a love for this same less-than-usual name?
