Jeremiah Name Meaning

A sweet name with Biblical ties, Jeremiah is making a comeback over his formerly preferred variant, Jeremy. Similar to Josiah and Isaiah, he has a soft sound and great meaning, a vintage pick with heart and merit.

Jeremiah appears in the Bible as a prophet who sought to bring the people of Israel closer to God. He faced great adversity in his quest, but is revered as a devoted follower of God. It’s a wonderful association, and his meaning of “God will exalt” certainly doesn’t hurt either. He’s a nice alternative to more popular Biblical picks, a familiar friend with established roots on the charts, but not too much fuss around him.

A charming name, Jeremiah is right at home on a little boy, the perfect pick for a curious kid on the go. Little Jeremiah is an eager learner, always ready to discover more. Jeremiah also has some seriously super cute nicknames to offer like Jerry, Jere, and the adorable Remy. He always has his full form to fall back on as well, a sturdy name for the adult world.

Jeremiah may have ancient roots, but he’s not at all dated, remaining fresh in sound and spirit. He’s right on the money when it comes to trends, working well alongside mega-popular picks like Elijah. He’s also a J name, a staple letter on the charts.

  1. I liked that it was a masculine name and named after a prophet in the Bible. He can choose Jerry as a nickname if he likes. It is recognizable enough to pronounce and spell but not overly common.

Jeremiah 29:11 was a verse that gave me strength and peace through his pregnancy.

  2. Strong biblical name

  3. I chose the name, Jeremiah by default. Everyone was guessing that we were having another girl, my husband included. Since no one was trying on boy names , I decided to name him if he were to be a boy, Jeremiah, because we were reading thru the book of Jeremiah of the Holy Bible. I was so happy that he was a boy because I didn’t have a girl name picked out and maybe something inside me was telling me he was a boy. Then I remembered that I had reserved Jeremiah as a boy name. It fit him immediately and so perfectly.

  4. I love my child with everything in me

  5. I like my name it’s umm… charming?

  6. I just had peace with the name throughout the last trimester.. the closer I got to the due date the more real his name became. And eventually it became a reality.

  7. I JUST LOVE THE NAME

  8. One reason is silly – my boys’ names increase in syllables (Kyle, Jackson, Benjamin, Jeremiah.) But we are also believers and love incorporating the Lord into our baby choices.

  9. My partner and I always knew that if we ever had a boy we would name him Jeremiah. Also, the Bible verses Jeremiah 1:5 and 29:11 always suck with me.

  10. We like that Jeremiah can be used in its full form or the nickname Miah we plan to use

  11. His name is out of the bible

  12. My brothers name is Jeremy and I often called him Jeremiah instead and it grew on me and when I got pregnant with a baby boy I just naturally shows Jeremiah. I also saying it has a very strong name.

  13. Jeremiah name after the guy on the bible
    RIA name after my father
    Peter name after my grandfather

  14. I chose the name Jeremiah for several reasons
    1. Its from the bible and i wanted a strong biblical name
    2. The book of Jeremiah is where my favorite verse is found. Jeremiah 29:11 “‘for i know the olans i have for you’ declares the LORD ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future’”

  20. The Lord gave us his name the first year we were married. He spoke to my husband and said “his name will be Jeremiah”
Honesty at first I was like I don’t want babies yet I just got married. So two years later when I was pregnant I for sure thought baby was going to be a boy, but she was a girl! Traditionally we name babies on the 8th day and announce it to oir family and friends in a ceremony along with the baby shower. The thought is that your name is your purpose she we prayed for God to give us the name for our children. So for baby #2 we already have the name but waiting for the 8th day to announce it our Jeremiah.

  21. My brother died when i was 14. 9 days before my birthday. His name was jeremy. So i named him after my brother. Jeremiah is the spanosh version.

  22. We choose Jeremiah because it’s biblical and not very common. The only thing I don’t like is there is no great way to shorten it. We don’t like Jerry or Miah so we have been calling him JR because is middle name is Richard.

  23. Name from the Bible, and because I was brought up in church, I love the name

  24. Jeremiah is in the bible

  25. Jeremiah is my husband’s name and it was important to him that our son share his name. We also both like that it is a strong biblical name. In Hebrew the name means “exalted of the Lord”.
