Luna Name Meaning

A name with beauty straight from the heavens, Luna means “the moon” in Latin. She’s also the Roman goddess of the moon, often depicted gallivanting in her ornate chariot.

Little Luna is on-par with similar celestial names Aurora and Nova, a trend that is taking the charts by surprise. Despite being a bit wordy in her roots, she’s familiar in feel to Lucy and Louisa, winning over parents with her delicate sound.

Short and sweet girl names are all the rage, with Remi, Mila, and Zoey all keeping Luna company in her rise to prominence. She may be astrological in her roots, but she’s completely at home here on Earth among her peers. Luna frequents the pages of fiction from Harry Potter to Marvel comics. She’s also seen in anime and film, her appeal irresistible to writers seeking otherworldly monikers.

Luna’s moonlit origins give her a subtle romantic appeal, similar to Isabella and Julietta without all the fuss. She’s simple yet devastating in her beauty, turning heads with her use as she’s still unexpected despite her rise in popularity. A little Luna stands apart in a crowd, her ethereal presence distinct from the Sophias and Emmas.

Nicknames include the petite Lou and the adorable Lulu, while variants like Lunetta will leave you breathless.

  1. I picked the name Luna because of a show my partner and I watched as kids called bear in the big blue house. There was a sweet character named Luna that was the moon and would sing with Bear at the end of each episode!

I like that it represents my youth and also the moon and magic.

  2. I have always been known as starface, so it seemed only appropriate to name her as my MOON.

I wish it wasn’t as popular but I still love the name

  3. Luna is related to the moon.

  4. I think Luna means wisdom and peace. I want to name my daughter Luna if she is smart.

  5. Luna Vera was a name her dad and I both instantly knew was hers to keep.
We love the moon rises at our lake house. We hope she will always know that she can shine her moonlight during times that are both easy and hard in life and may she be that light to others if they may need it..

Vera means True – and it comes from my mums name Veronika

  6. We wanted a name that was nature themed and we’re going back and forth with a few. We decided on Luna because of its meaning “goddess of the moon”. When we were considering it, we were sitting in her nursery and noticed a lot of the artwork we put up had moons. This was completely unintentional and just felt like a sign!

  7. Before I fell pregnant, me and her dad both said that we have always wanted to call our daughter (if we were to have one, which we did), Luna, we had both thought this before we even met, so as soon as we found out we were having a girl, it was an easy name to agree on!

  8. I think we are all ruled and linked to the moon and Luna is the name of a moon goddess. I have had visions of my daughter through a shamanic journeying session before she was born and also when she was growing inside me and I recieved multiple signs from my angels in the way of waking up to specific angel numbers during my pregnancy, to butterflies circling her pram inside a coffee shop after she was born.

Our Friends and family have also had visions of her and they can feel her spiritual connection to the universe.

My name means star in Hindi and I know my daughter will shine her bright light through this universe. I named her Sparkle in my belly before her gender was confirmed so her name is Luna and her middle name is Sparkle.

  9. I’m so comfortable reading this while my name is Luna! I always wanted to know my name’s information!

    • Information please

  12. ???

  13. Because she came to brighten our lives

  14. We chose Luna because we heard it one day and just fell in love with it. She is our light in the dark. The day we found out I was pregnant was the same day my boyfriend had to say goodbye to his grandmother. She is a wide eyed beauty and already so strong. She has a huge personality and she’s only 2 weeks old.

  15. We wanted something that was simple but not too common, as well as wanting a name people won’t mispronounce and was able to be said in both English and Spanish.

  16. Well my little boy would always tell us if it’s a baby sister I would love for her to me name Luna like the moon and of course we feel in love with the name

    • I love the name luna. We named our daughter who is 10 months old Luna-May

  19. Luna Mae is the perfect combination of new age and southern, has a certain ring to it especially with our 3 syllable last name, and its a tribute to literature as well as being ancestral.

  20. Her name is Luna Aurora. Luna since I wanted to give her a Latin name and she came in a season of darkness for us. We tell her she was the light in our season of grief. Aurora for my bisabuela who created all of our families traditional meal recipes. My cultural identity is very tied to those home recipes and I wanted to pass on the beautiful name of my great grandmother.

  21. My dad always told me “I love you to the moon and back,” this rang in my head over and over again as we were deciding on a name. We have this sign in our bathroom that was there when I first found out I was pregnant and it says “the amo a la Luna y de regreso” Luna was staring at us from the very beginning. We love our girl and as soon as she was born we knew there was no other name for her!

  22. I was looking at the skye so i saw a star and it give an idea to name it lunaaa

  23. We decided to name our daughter Luna because it wasn’t very common but heard of and it means moon which we loved. 31. Luna means moon. When I think of the moon, I think of a full moon and there always being light in the dark. I miscarried in Oct 2018, Luna is my rainbow baby. She is my light in the dark. Her middle name is Rayne. In French Rayne means Queen. Strength. She is in the NICU but I know she has the strength of a Queen to make it through.

  32. It was obvious from the day I found out I was pregnant, that the only name for a girl (we did not know child;s gender until she was born) was going to be Luna, it was meant to be!
it is a beautiful, rare name,
just like one of the readers above I am a bit -maybe not worried but – stunned seeing how many dog Lunas I see nowadays, hope it won’t feel wrong in the future, it is a girl’s name and we live in Europe (Poland and UK)

  33. Mom and dad of Luna were unsure of gender but before baby was born in the comfort of our home dad took a walk outside before his first born, laid eyes on the big full moon and was feeling the name Luna if a girl. She was born a girl.

    • I had a similar experience, I was sure I had miscarried my baby until I saw the image of a baby in the full moon. I was both freaked out and filled with relief at the same time. Then the name Luna came to me…..I have never looked back and I was happy when daddy loved the name too.

  34. I love all things that have to do with nature and our world. Luna really stuck out to me because it sounds like a name given to the goddess of the moon. We love her name and it fits our little moon baby’s personality. The only con is that a lot of people like to name their dog Luna ????

Also, I’m a huge Harry Potter fan and anyone who knows Harry Potter knows Luna Lovegood is such a gem of a character. ALSO it was one of the few names both my husband and I agreed on. Luna is such a beautiful name! I don’t know any other Lunas, even though now that I have a Luna I feel like I hear and see the name everywhere. It’s unique, it’s pronounceable, and it’s easy to spell. Also, nicknames! Lulu, Lu, Lilu (any Fifth Element fans?… short for “Little Luna” too.)

She LOOKS like a Luna, too. After she came out and I saw her sweet face I knew she was a Luna. I was skeptical about how a baby could “look” like they belonged to a name but the first time I saw my girl I knew we had chosen the right name for her.

  38. I named my daughter in honor of Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series. Luna is a person who is unafraid of being different; she is confident and secure in her uniqueness. She is also kind and honest and imaginative. These are all traits I hope to help my Luna foster!! Also, Luna means moon, and the peaceful serenity and quiet wisdom of the moon was a factor in loving the name as well!

    • I’m planning to name my daughter Luna Serena <3

      • That’s a really pretty name
