Amelia Name Meaning

Amelia is a beacon of strength, invoking images of American aviator Amelia Earhart and famed feminist Amelia Bloomer. She manages to radiate power despite her soft sound, easily teetering in either direction depending on the little girl she’s bestowed upon.

Amelia has taken the U.S. by storm, brushing off the dust of underuse to roar into the U.S. Top 10 at Number 8 in 2017. She’s a popular choice thanks to her trendy ending matching Sophia, Olivia, and Mia. There’s little doubt that she’ll remain a fixture up there, nestled in with her irresistible charm and familiar feels. Nineties babies may remember the Amelia Bedelia books, detailing the hilarious misunderstandings of the title character, giving this name a comical side as well.

A variant of Amalia, Amelia has a hefty share of nicknames for prospective parents to choose from including Lia, Mila, and Mimi. Meeley is another spunky option, a moniker that Amelia Earhart went by into adulthood.

Amelia will likely remain a go-to choice for many as her soft vowel start paired with M fits in well with favorites like Emily and Emma but is still distinguished enough on her own to stand out. The name ages beautifully, perfect for a little girl and busy professional alike.

  1. I chose the name Amelia because it means strong and that exactly what my daughter is. The only thing i dislike about her name is most people do not pronounce it correctly.

  2. Similar to grandmothers name “Amalie

  3. To me it was absolutely beautiful like I knew she would be and it had a way about it that seemed graceful yet also not a common name so she wouldn’t have multiple people with that name in her classes and I also wanted her to have the sam beginning initials as me

  4. Me and My Hubby named our Princess Amelia. I fall in love with the name when I was pregnant with her. And we are very happy to have a very beautiful, determined and sweet baby girl like Amelia.

  5. I chose the name Amelia because it’d been running through her father’s head for a while. Plus it’s unique in the African American community. She’s going to live up to that name in so many ways ?

  6. This was one pf my top three names. I wanted to give her a name that was strong. Amelia is a pretty name, as well as a heroic female figure, Amelia Earhart. One day I was shopping and my husband texts me “I think I have a great name for her come home as soon as you can” I had not told him yet about my top three. When I got home his suggestion was Amelia. I knew then that was it, we had both come up with the same name!

  7. I Named her Amelia meaning Ray of sunshine. Her middle name is Luna meaning moon. She is my Ray of sunshine moon.

  8. X

  9. My husband’s grandmother was named Amy and he was very close with her. She died after we were only married a year. When we were discussing girl names we had thought about honoring his grandmother somehow. We chose Amelia because it is close to Amy and we both loved it.

  10. Hubby’s and I chose it and the one name we loved

  11. I love how versatile it is and its classic

  12. My husband and I went with nationality’s with names he picked boy names and I picked girl names and narrowed it down to Amelia for our daughter. I heard the name in high school and loved the name then and I still do today with more meaning

  13. I loved that it’s old fashioned, and has some excellent people to live up to. It also has awesome nicknames that we could use, should we choose to.

  14. My husband and I were watching an episode of HBO’s “True Detective ” and one of the main character’s names was Amelia. It was the 1st and only name we could agree on. We stuch with it for over 6 months.
I hate that people proniunce it as (ah meel ya) instead of it’s actual phonetic pronunciation as (ah mee lee ah). I correct most people but its gets tiresome. They clearly hear us pronouncing the name and they still say it wrong. Amelia will grow up knowing the correct way to say it.

  15. We named her Amelia after Amelia Earhart
    I love her names
She is such a smart loving caring funny little girl

  16. We named our first daughter Eleanor and thought the 2 names went well together.

  17. We actually had the name Amelia picked out way before we got pregnant. The first house we lived in together was on Amelia Circle and it was such a wonderful place to us. My husband even proposed on the porch of that house! We always talked about Amelia being a great girls name and when she was born it felt right. We still LOVE the name and think it fits her adventurous spirit perfectly.

  18. Amelia

  19. We only had a few girl names picked out. We thought we were going to have a boy. At the last minute I went to the library and checked out some baby name books. I went through thousands of girl names. Amelia was one of the few more I added to our girl name list. After baby was born (we didnt find out gender prior to birth), we didnt decide on her name until we had to. It was between Amelia or Abigail. Abigail was what we had planned on the entire time up until and then we changed our mind. Amelia it was. Her name means determined and industrious woman and ambitious. Plus we thought it was cool that an Amelia flew an airplane. Even though she didnt make it, she was definitely a determined lady. Our little Amelia has lived up to her name for sure. She is now almost 3yrs old. Her middle name is after her Grandma (my husbands mom who passed away). Amelia Joy is beautiful and most precious to us!.

  20. In Hebrew it means “work of the Lord”. We moved overseas as missionaries shortly after she was born; so it was fitting. It was also very uncommon at the time. We paired it with Joy for a middle name to match mine.
