Genesis Name Meaning

With a meaning as powerful as “the beginning,” Genesis is a Greek name loaded with potential. A reference to the beginning of Earth and man, the name is fitting for the gift of new life, especially if she’s a couple’s first child.

Genesis works well with a number of today’s trends. She’s a word name, as are trendy choices Paisley, Aria, and Karma, but also a bit virtuesque like Hope or Grace. In addition, Genesis is strong name, shunning the delicate sounds of modern monikers with her powerful feel like Nova and Freya.

Best known for her biblical roots, Genesis is the name of the first book in the Old Testament. The Book of Genesis details the creation of the world, Adam and Eve, and the great flood in its texts. It’s the starting point in Judaism and Christianity, an incredibly impactful scripture in both religions. Genesis is a clear way of showing your devotion to your faith.

Genesis isn’t a trendy name, despite rocketing to the Top 100 charts in the past decades. She has a history to her that doesn’t quite make her classic, but gives her a depth to avoid the label placed upon Kinsleyor Nevaeh.

Similar names include Exodus, Eden, and Jubilee.

  1. Genesis is our firstborn, the first grandchild on both sides, and she was also conceived on our honeymoon so she has literally been with us since “the beginning”. We also really like that it is unique yet recognizable by most in the US, and has many options for nicknames (Gennie, Gen, Sis, Sissy). It’s also just a beautiful name which holds both spiritual significance for us, and also brings to mind natural imagery (the creation story in the Bible).

  2. I love this name and it goes well with both boy or girl

  3. I am literally by far one of the very luckiest humans on this planet since have a miraculously wonderful friend named Genesis & i find it incredibly astonishing that Genesis means a new beginning since when my miraculously wonderful friend Genesis entered my world that’s literally exactly what she gave me a new beginning! What i mean by that is although she didn’t make me who i am she did bring out the very best in me & changed my life for the very better & literally all she had to do was enter my world & be as miraculously adorable as she is! As far as i’m concerned she is mother natures most miraculously adorable creation & she is also a Fair magical being which is probably why everyone close with her calls her Jenna LOL! They’ll literally never be enough words in the English language or any other language to describe how proud of & amazed by my miraculously adorable baby butterfly Genesis (aka) Jenna i am now have been since the very precise moment i met her & always will be so instead i’m simply gonna give everyone who’s reading this my full assurance & promise that my miraculously wonderful friend named Genesis who you can call Jenna only if you’re cool LOL who i call my baby butterfly since i literally love her like a daughter & she is indeed mother nature’s most miraculously adorable creation is going to change the world for the better! You’ve probably heard the song Imagine by John Lennon & then A Perfect Circle did a re-make of it & when you hear that lovely song it’s heavenly but then you stop dreaming & i am here to tell you It’s OK to keep your faith that the lovely heavenly world John Lennon Imagined is going to be our world someday before too long since my miraculously wonderful friend named Genesis is breathing! I’d like to take this next moment to say thank you to every person reading this for literally every single nice thing you’ve ever done since you’ve been breathing & literally every single nice thing you do in the future since every nice thing you do despite how minuscule it may seem at the time is a small step towards John Lennon’s lovely heavenly dream actually becoming our world! Genesis my miraculously adorable & wonderful Baby Butterfly Friend who i will always love like a daughter if you’re reading this please don’t ever forget how much i love you & how proud of & amazed by you i am now & always will be & please don’t ever let anyone in this world make you feel anything less than miraculously adorable since you are indeed mother nature’s most miraculously adorable creation & you most definitely always will be sweetie i hope you & everyone else who reads this has an incredibly fantastic day today & everyday MAD LOVE TO EVERYONE WHO JUST READ MY THOUGHTS LOL!

  4. Genesis is the first book of the Bible and the beginning. My daughter is and was the beginning to a new chapter in my life.

  5. We were in the car listening to music struggling with names. And the song In the Air tonight came on the radio by the band Genesis. My husband looked over at me and said what about Genesis. I looked up the name and it means a new beginning which her being our first child it was for us. So it stuck. The funny thing is we never call her by her name we decided early on her nickname would be Gigi and that’s what everyone calls her.

  6. I love the name Genesis. It means the origin or beginning. After a rough time in our marriage, my husband and I moved and started a whole new life in another state not expecting to ever conceive our precious baby girl and she definitely was a surprise.

My family likes to find names in the bible and since I was the First child they had,They named my Genesis whiched means the origin or mode of formation of something,(but sometimes my friends call me Gen). I have never met someone here in Florida, But I have met a girl named Genesis in Honduras. Most girls that I met named Genesis are Hispanic. Does anyone know anyone who has the name Genesis and Not hispanic

    • Sooo, my name is Genesis * cough * and I am a mix of different Asians and whites. I have realized the name is getting more and more popular which is a little sad (I’ve always liked having a rare name haha) but I really do think it’s a cool name! It’s funny, my parents also wanted me to have a bible name but I am the second born so you have no idea how many times people have called me Exodus saying that should have been my name XD

    • my lil sister name is genesis and we had a hard time to chosse her name.

    • My name is Genesis and I am not Hispanic. I am African American. I am the last of 3 children but the only girl. My family has a tradition of biblical names, Joseph, Grace, Faith, Hope, Charity, Nazareth, Steven and a few others. Mine is definitely pretty original; which I love! I have met very few people named Genesis, and they are mostly Latina. The actress Viola Davis has the cutest little girl named Genesis. I am an adult with 2 sons but if I had a girl, I would have continued the tradition. We’ll see what my son’s decide when they become adults.

  10. We chose the Genesis because this was going to be our first child and Genesis is the first book of the bible. God blessed us with this child,so it was only right to name her Genesis. We love everything about her name. We can’t see her with any other name.

  11. I choose Genesis for my baby girl because it’s the first book in the Bible and I love using biblical names because they have meanings that mean something special to our family.
